Equirab 1500 IU Injection – Rabies Immunoglobulin for Post-Exposure Treatment

Equirab 1500 IU is a specialized medication used for passive immunization against rabies. Unlike a standard vaccine, which teaches your body to produce its own antibodies over time, this immunoglobulin provides "ready-made" antibodies for immediate protection.

It is specifically designed for Post-Exposure Prophylaxis (PEP), administered immediately after a person has been bitten or scratched by an animal suspected of having rabies.

Key Features & Usage

  • Immediate Neutralization: It works by neutralizing the rabies virus at the site of the wound before the virus can travel to the central nervous system.

  • Category III Exposure: Essential for high-risk exposures (Category III), which include single or multiple transdermal bites, scratches, or contamination of mucous membranes with saliva.

  • Combination Therapy: It is almost always administered alongside the first dose of the rabies vaccine. While the vaccine provides long-term immunity, Equirab covers the "immunity gap" during the first few days after exposure.

  • Administration: Typically, as much of the dose as anatomically possible is infiltrated around and into the wound site, with the remainder given as an intramuscular injection.

  • Important Safety Information

[!IMPORTANT] This product is for post-exposure use only and must be administered under the strict supervision of a healthcare professional. It is not a substitute for the complete rabies vaccination series.

    • Prompt Treatment: For maximum effectiveness, it should be administered as soon as possible after exposure.

    • Sensitivity Testing: Since this is often an equine-derived (horse) product, healthcare providers may perform a skin sensitivity test before administration to check for allergic reactions.
