Prescription veterinary antibiotic — use only under the direction of a licensed veterinarian. Do not use in animals with known hypersensitivity to cephalosporins; cross-reactivity with penicillins is possible, so use with caution in patients with a history of penicillin allergy. Complete the full prescribed course even if signs improve early — stopping an antibiotic course prematurely encourages bacterial resistance. Use with caution and consider dose adjustment in animals with renal impairment, as Cephalexin is eliminated largely unchanged by renal excretion. Gastrointestinal upset (vomiting, diarrhoea, inappetence) is the most commonly reported adverse effect; give with food if this occurs. Safety in pregnant and lactating animals should be confirmed with a veterinarian. Keep out of reach of children. Store in a cool, dry place below 30°C, protected from light and moisture.

Oriheal Palacef Cephalexin Antibiotic Vet Tablets for Dogs & Cats | 300mg & 600mg

Oriheal Palacef is a prescription veterinary antibiotic tablet containing Cephalexin, a first-generation cephalosporin with reliable activity against the Gram-positive organisms that cause the majority of canine and feline skin and soft tissue infections, notably Staphylococcus pseudintermedius, along with useful cover against susceptible Gram-negative pathogens such as Escherichia coli, Proteus mirabilis, and Klebsiella species. Cephalexin is one of the most widely prescribed first-line antibiotics in small animal practice for pyoderma, wound infections, urinary tract infections, and respiratory infections. Palacef is supplied as a palatable tablet in two strengths — 300mg for cats and smaller dogs, and 600mg for medium to large dogs — allowing accurate body-weight based dosing without splitting tablets.

Active Ingredient & Mechanism of Action

  • Cephalexin — 300mg or 600mg per tablet (first-generation cephalosporin, beta-lactam class). Cephalexin is bactericidal and acts by inhibiting the final cross-linking stage of bacterial cell wall synthesis. The beta-lactam ring binds covalently to penicillin-binding proteins (PBPs) — the transpeptidase enzymes embedded in the bacterial cytoplasmic membrane — blocking the transpeptidation reaction that cross-links adjacent peptidoglycan strands. The cell wall that results is structurally weak, and as the organism continues to grow, autolytic enzymes degrade the wall until the bacterium lyses under its own internal osmotic pressure. Because peptidoglycan cell walls are unique to bacteria and absent in mammalian cells, beta-lactams have a wide margin of safety in the treated animal. Cephalexin is more stable against staphylococcal beta-lactamase than the natural penicillins, which is why it retains activity against the beta-lactamase-producing staphylococci typical of canine pyoderma.

Therapeutic Class

  • Prescription veterinary systemic antibacterial — first-generation cephalosporin (beta-lactam) oral tablet for dogs and cats

Indications

  • Skin and soft tissue infections: pyoderma, impetigo, hot spots, wound and abscess infections
  • Urinary tract infections caused by susceptible organisms
  • Respiratory tract infections: bronchitis, tracheobronchitis (kennel cough) with bacterial involvement
  • Post-surgical infection prevention and prophylaxis
  • Bone and joint infections caused by susceptible bacteria
  • Pyrexia of unknown origin with a suspected bacterial cause

Dosage & Administration

  • Administer orally at the dose, frequency, and duration prescribed by your veterinarian
  • Dose is based on body weight, infection site, and severity
  • Use the 300mg strength for cats and small dogs, and the 600mg strength for medium to large dogs
