VETERINARY PRESCRIPTION DRUG — For use in dogs only. Not for use in female animals or humans. Women who are or may become pregnant must not handle crushed or broken tablets (risk of foetal harm — Finasteride is a known teratogen in pregnant females; absorbed transdermally). Keep out of reach of children. Store in a cool, dry place away from direct sunlight. Use only under veterinary prescription and supervision.

Vivaldis Finapet Finasteride 5mg Tablets for Dogs (Pack of 10 Tablets)

Vivaldis Finapet contains Finasteride 5mg per tablet — a synthetic 4-azasteroid competitive inhibitor of Type II 5-alpha reductase (5αR2) — for veterinary use in dogs. Finasteride is indicated for the treatment of androgen-dependent conditions in intact male dogs, primarily benign prostatic hyperplasia (BPH), prostatic cysts, and other testosterone/dihydrotestosterone (DHT)-driven prostatic and androgen-dependent pathologies. For use under veterinary prescription only.

Composition (per tablet)

  • Finasteride — 5mg: Synthetic 4-azasteroid; competitive and specific inhibitor of intracellular Type II 5-alpha reductase (5α-reductase isoenzyme 2, SRD5A2)
  • Excipients q.s.: Confirm excipient composition from the product label

Mechanism of Action

  • 5-Alpha Reductase Inhibition — DHT Reduction: Finasteride is a competitive inhibitor of Type II 5-alpha reductase (5αR2), the intracellular enzyme responsible for irreversible conversion of testosterone (T) to the more potent androgen dihydrotestosterone (DHT) via NADPH-dependent reduction of the C4-C5 double bond of the A ring of the steroid nucleus; DHT has 3–5 times higher binding affinity for the androgen receptor (AR) than testosterone and a significantly longer receptor dissociation half-life; in prostatic tissue, DHT — not testosterone — is the primary androgen driving prostatic epithelial and stromal cell proliferation through AR-mediated upregulation of growth factors (FGF, EGF, IGF-1) and anti-apoptotic signalling; Finasteride forms a stable enzyme-inhibitor complex with 5αR2, reducing serum DHT concentrations by 60–80% and intraprostatic DHT concentrations by >85–90%; this DHT reduction causes prostatic epithelial cell apoptosis, involution of the prostatic epithelial compartment, and reduction in overall prostate volume and weight; reduction in prostate volume improves lower urinary tract symptoms (LUTS), urethral obstruction, haematuria, and prostatic discharge in affected dogs; Finasteride does not block the androgen receptor directly and does not suppress testosterone synthesis or LH/FSH secretion, preserving libido and spermatogenesis at therapeutic doses (though some reduction in semen quality has been reported); Type I vs Type II isoenzyme distribution: 5αR1 (Type I) is expressed in skin/liver; 5αR2 (Type II) is the dominant isoenzyme in prostatic epithelium, liver, and genital skin in dogs; Finasteride at 5mg doses primarily inhibits Type II activity; Dutasteride inhibits both Type I and Type II and produces greater DHT suppression but is not the compound in this formulation

Therapeutic Class

  • Veterinary 5-alpha reductase inhibitor (Type II) — androgen biosynthesis modifier — DHT suppression — benign prostatic hyperplasia, prostatic cysts, androgen-dependent conditions — intact male dogs — prescription drug

Indications

  • Benign Prostatic Hyperplasia (BPH) in intact male dogs — reduction of prostate volume, urethral obstruction, haematuria, prostatic discharge
  • Prostatic cysts associated with BPH in intact male dogs
  • Androgen-dependent perianal (circumanal) adenomas in intact male dogs
  • Other androgen-dependent prostatic conditions as determined by a veterinarian

Dosage & Administration

  • As directed by a veterinarian; confirm dose and duration from the prescribing veterinarian and product label
  • Administer orally; can be given with or without food
  • 10 tablets per pack
  • Do not crush or split tablets if handled by women of childbearing age — Finasteride is absorbed transdermally and is teratogenic

Safety & Contraindications

  • For intact male dogs only; not for use in female animals, castrated males, or non-canine species without specific veterinary direction
  • Teratogen warning: pregnant women or women of childbearing potential must not handle broken or crushed tablets — Finasteride causes abnormalities of external genitalia in male foetuses when administered to pregnant females; intact tablets have a coating that prevents skin contact with the active if handled normally
  • Monitor semen quality if used in breeding dogs — some reduction in semen volume and sperm function has been reported
  • Use with caution in dogs with hepatic impairment (Finasteride is extensively metabolised by hepatic CYP3A4)
  • Store in a cool, dry place; keep out of reach of children and other animals
