Prescription Required — For veterinary use only. Administer strictly under the supervision of a licensed veterinarian.

This is a reserve antibiotic. Please use it as one. Faropenem is held back for infections that first- and second-line antibiotics cannot clear, ideally chosen on culture and sensitivity results. Every unnecessary course makes it less likely to work when an animal genuinely needs it, and the resistant organisms it targets move between pets and people. For owners, that means a few simple rules. Give every dose at the prescribed time and finish the entire course, even when your pet looks better in three days, because stopping early leaves the toughest bacteria behind. Never give leftover antibiotics from a previous illness or another animal, never give human antibiotics to a pet, and never save what is left over — return unused tablets to your veterinarian or pharmacy. Antibiotics do nothing against viral infections. Do not use in animals with known allergy to penicillins, cephalosporins, or carbapenems, as cross-reactivity is possible. Tell your veterinarian about kidney or liver disease and every other medicine your pet is on. Loose stools are common with broad-spectrum antibiotics, but contact your veterinarian promptly if you see facial swelling, hives, difficulty breathing, severe or bloody diarrhoea, persistent vomiting, or a pet that becomes dull and stops eating. Give with a little food if it causes stomach upset, and space any probiotic a couple of hours apart. Consult your veterinarian before use in pregnant, lactating, or very young animals. Keep out of reach of children; store in a cool, dry place away from direct sunlight.

Oriheal Petopenem FR Faropenem Sodium 200mg Oral Penem Antibiotic Tablet for Dogs & Cats

Oriheal Petopenem FR is a veterinary prescription oral antibiotic tablet containing Faropenem Sodium 200mg, manufactured by Oriheal Lifesciences. Faropenem is an oral penem — a beta-lactam antibiotic structurally related to carbapenems — with broad-spectrum activity against gram-positive and gram-negative bacteria including many ESBL-producing and multidrug-resistant (MDR) strains. Petopenem FR is indicated for resistant bacterial infections of the urinary tract, skin and soft tissue, and respiratory tract in dogs and cats when first- and second-line antibiotics have failed or when culture and sensitivity results indicate faropenem susceptibility. Its practical value is the route: resistant infections have historically meant hospitalising the patient for injectable carbapenems, while an oral penem can keep a stable animal at home on tablets.

Composition (per tablet)

  • Faropenem Sodium — 200mg (oral penem / beta-lactam antibiotic — broad-spectrum including ESBL and MDR strains)

Mechanism of Action

  • Faropenem inhibits bacterial cell wall synthesis by binding to penicillin-binding proteins (PBPs) — disrupts peptidoglycan cross-linking, leading to bacterial cell lysis and death
  • As a penem, faropenem is stable against many beta-lactamases (including ESBLs) that inactivate penicillins and cephalosporins — providing coverage for resistant gram-negative pathogens
  • Broad-spectrum bactericidal activity: gram-positive (Staphylococcus, Streptococcus), gram-negative (E. coli, Klebsiella, Proteus), and anaerobic bacteria

Therapeutic Class

  • Veterinary oral penem (beta-lactam) broad-spectrum antibiotic prescription tablet for dogs and cats — for resistant and MDR bacterial infections

Key Benefits

  • Oral penem — provides carbapenem-class-adjacent coverage in an oral tablet format; avoids the need for parenteral administration in many resistant infection cases
  • Stable against ESBL-producing gram-negative bacteria — effective where penicillins and cephalosporins fail
  • Broad-spectrum coverage including gram-positive, gram-negative, and anaerobic pathogens
  • Allows outpatient treatment of resistant infections that would otherwise need hospitalisation
  • Oral tablet format — accurate dosing and straightforward home administration

Indications

  • Resistant urinary tract infections (UTIs) including ESBL-producing and MDR organisms in dogs and cats
  • Skin and soft tissue infections unresponsive to first- and second-line antibiotics
  • Respiratory tract infections (pneumonia, tracheobronchitis) due to resistant bacteria
  • Mixed bacterial infections with confirmed or suspected MDR involvement
  • Infections where culture and sensitivity results indicate faropenem susceptibility

Directions for Use

  • Administer orally as directed by a licensed veterinarian — ideally based on culture and sensitivity results
  • Dosage, frequency, and duration determined by the prescribing veterinarian based on species, body weight, infection site, and culture results — refer to veterinary prescription
  • Give doses at evenly spaced intervals to maintain steady blood levels
  • Give with a small amount of food if mild stomach upset occurs
  • Complete the full prescribed course even if clinical signs improve early — incomplete courses may promote resistance
  • Attend recheck appointments, including repeat urine culture where advised

Safety Information

  • Prescription medicine — for veterinary use only; administer under licensed veterinary supervision
  • Use only when indicated by culture and sensitivity results or clinical assessment of resistant infection — faropenem is a reserve antibiotic; avoid empirical use to preserve efficacy
  • Do not use in animals with known hypersensitivity to beta-lactam antibiotics (penicillins, cephalosporins, carbapenems) — cross-reactivity possible
  • Monitor renal function during therapy in animals with pre-existing renal impairment
  • Report severe or bloody diarrhoea, persistent vomiting, rash, facial swelling, or breathing difficulty immediately
  • Keep out of reach of children; store in a cool, dry place away from direct sunlight
