Prescription Required — For veterinary use only. Administer strictly under the supervision of a licensed veterinarian. Injectable medicine — for intravenous (IV) or intramuscular (IM) administration by a qualified veterinary professional only. Last-resort antibiotic — WHO Critically Important Antimicrobial (CIA); use only with confirmed bacterial culture, sensitivity, and veterinary prescription. Do not use empirically without microbiological justification.

This is a hospital medicine, not a home treatment. Do not attempt to inject a pet at home and do not buy it without a prescription for a specific, cultured infection. Carbapenems are among the last antibiotics that still work against the most resistant bacteria in both animals and people, and every unjustified course erodes that. No dose is published here: dosing depends on body weight, infection site, severity, and renal function, and comes from the prescribing veterinarian. Reconstitute exactly as the label directs, inspect the solution before use, use it immediately or within the stated stability window, and discard any remainder — single patient use only. Use aseptic technique with fresh sterile needles and syringes, do not mix with other drugs in the same syringe or infusion line without confirmed compatibility, flush lines between medicines, and dispose of vials and sharps in a sharps container. Complete the full prescribed course. Report facial swelling, hives, breathing difficulty, tremors or seizure activity, severe or bloody diarrhoea, or sudden collapse immediately. Keep out of reach of children.

Oriheal Petopenem Meropenem Veterinary Carbapenem Antibiotic Injection for Dogs & Cats

Oriheal Petopenem is a veterinary prescription injectable antibiotic containing Meropenem, a carbapenem-class beta-lactam antibiotic, manufactured by Oriheal Lifesciences. Meropenem is one of the broadest-spectrum antibiotics available in veterinary medicine, providing activity against a wide range of Gram-positive, Gram-negative, and anaerobic bacteria, including multidrug-resistant (MDR) organisms such as extended-spectrum beta-lactamase (ESBL)-producing Enterobacteriaceae, Pseudomonas aeruginosa, and Acinetobacter spp. It is reserved for the treatment of severe, life-threatening, or multidrug-resistant bacterial infections in dogs and cats where first- and second-line antibiotics have failed or are contraindicated based on culture and sensitivity results. Available in three strengths: 250mg, 500mg, and 1g vials.

Composition (per vial)

  • Petopenem 250mg: Meropenem (as Meropenem trihydrate) — 250mg per vial
  • Petopenem 500mg: Meropenem (as Meropenem trihydrate) — 500mg per vial
  • Petopenem 1g: Meropenem (as Meropenem trihydrate) — 1000mg (1g) per vial
  • Sodium carbonate (as solubiliser) — confirm from label; reconstitute with sterile water for injection or sodium chloride 0.9% as directed

Mechanism of Action

  • Meropenem inhibits bacterial cell wall synthesis by binding to penicillin-binding proteins (PBPs), disrupting peptidoglycan cross-linking and causing rapid bacterial cell lysis and death
  • Carbapenem ring structure confers resistance to hydrolysis by most beta-lactamases, including ESBLs and AmpC beta-lactamases — effective where other beta-lactams fail
  • Bactericidal against both Gram-positive and Gram-negative organisms including many MDR strains

Therapeutic Class

  • Veterinary carbapenem beta-lactam antibiotic (WHO Critically Important Antimicrobial — last-resort class) prescription injection for dogs and cats — severe, life-threatening, and multidrug-resistant bacterial infections

Key Benefits

  • Ultra-broad spectrum — active against Gram-positive, Gram-negative, and anaerobic bacteria including MDR organisms (ESBL-producing Enterobacteriaceae, Pseudomonas aeruginosa, Acinetobacter spp., Klebsiella pneumoniae)
  • Carbapenem stability — resistant to hydrolysis by most beta-lactamases; active where extended-spectrum penicillins, cephalosporins, and fluoroquinolones have failed
  • Bactericidal action — rapid bactericidal activity with time-dependent pharmacodynamics
  • Three strengths available — 250mg, 500mg, and 1g vials allow precise weight-based dosing across small and large breed patients

Indications

  • Severe or life-threatening bacterial infections in dogs and cats where culture and sensitivity confirm Meropenem as the appropriate antibiotic
  • Multidrug-resistant (MDR) bacterial infections — ESBL-producing Enterobacteriaceae, Pseudomonas aeruginosa, Klebsiella pneumoniae, Acinetobacter spp.
  • Sepsis and bacteraemia in critically ill dogs and cats
  • Severe urinary tract infections (UTI) and pyelonephritis with resistant organisms
  • Severe respiratory tract infections — pneumonia, pleuropneumonia with MDR pathogens
  • Post-surgical and hospital-acquired infections with documented MDR organisms
  • Severe wound, abscess, and soft tissue infections unresponsive to first- and second-line antibiotics

Directions for Use

  • Administer by intravenous (IV) infusion or intramuscular (IM) injection as directed by a licensed veterinarian
  • Reconstitute with sterile water for injection or 0.9% sodium chloride as per label instructions; administer immediately after reconstitution
  • Dosage and dosing interval based on body weight, infection severity, renal function, and culture/sensitivity results — refer strictly to the veterinary prescription
  • Single patient use — discard any unused reconstituted solution
  • Complete the full prescribed antibiotic course; do not discontinue early even if clinical signs resolve
  • Use only based on confirmed culture and sensitivity results — empirical carbapenem use without microbiological justification is not recommended (antibiotic stewardship)

Safety Information

  • Prescription medicine — for veterinary use only; IV/IM administration by a licensed veterinary professional only
  • WHO Critically Important Antimicrobial (CIA) — carbapenems are the last-resort antibiotic class for MDR Gram-negative infections; use only with confirmed culture and sensitivity; antibiotic stewardship is mandatory
  • Confirm beta-lactam hypersensitivity (penicillin/cephalosporin) before administration; cross-reactivity with other beta-lactams possible in sensitised animals
  • Use with caution in patients with seizure history or neurological disease — carbapenems (particularly imipenem) have been associated with seizures at high doses; Meropenem has lower seizure risk but caution is warranted
  • Renal impairment — Meropenem is renally excreted; reduce dose and/or frequency in patients with significant renal insufficiency
  • Do not combine with other drugs in the same syringe or line without confirmed compatibility
  • Keep out of reach of children; store unreconstituted vials as directed on label (typically at controlled room temperature); use reconstituted solution immediately or within the stability window stated on label
