Virbac Suprelorin Deslorelin Implant for Dogs
Virbac Suprelorin Deslorelin Implant for Dogs & Ferrets
Suprelorin is a sustained-release deslorelin acetate implant designed for the temporary, non-surgical suppression of fertility in male dogs and ferrets. As a GnRH super-agonist, Suprelorin works by safely and effectively reducing testosterone production, leading to decreased sperm production and reduced libido.
With growing concern among pet owners about permanent neutering, Suprelorin offers a reversible chemical castration option, allowing owners and veterinarians to assess the effects of castration before committing to surgery—truly proving that there’s more than one way to crack a nut.
The implant is inserted subcutaneously and provides long-term, continuous hormone suppression for either six or twelve months, depending on the presentation.
How Suprelorin Works
Suprelorin contains deslorelin, which mimics natural gonadotropin-releasing hormone (GnRH). When released continuously in low doses, it suppresses the secretion of luteinising hormone (LH) and follicle-stimulating hormone (FSH).
This leads to:
-
Reduced testosterone levels
-
Temporary infertility
-
Decreased libido and mating behaviours
Effects are typically observed from 6 weeks in dogs and 5–14 weeks in ferrets.
