Vivaldis Vinectra Duo Spot On for Cats | Imidacloprid + Moxidectin Broad-Spectrum Antiparasitic

Vivaldis Vinectra Duo Spot On is a broad-spectrum veterinary topical antiparasitic for cats combining two active ingredients: Imidacloprid (neonicotinoid insecticide — ectoparasiticide) and Moxidectin (macrocyclic lactone endectocide — endoparasiticide and ectoparasiticide). A single monthly spot-on application provides comprehensive protection against both external parasites (fleas, ticks, ear mites, sarcoptic mites) and internal parasites (intestinal roundworms, hookworms, and heartworm prevention). Available in two weight-based pipette sizes: 0.3ml for cats up to 2.5kg and 0.9ml for cats 2.5–7.5kg. Suitable for use in kittens above 0.6kg body weight and adult cats.

Composition

  • Imidacloprid: as per label concentration (%w/v)
  • Moxidectin: as per label concentration (%w/v)
  • Excipients: topical solution base

Drug Class

  • Veterinary topical endectocide — Imidacloprid (neonicotinoid, nicotinic acetylcholine receptor agonist) + Moxidectin (macrocyclic lactone, glutamate-gated chloride channel agonist) — broad-spectrum ectoparasiticide + endoparasiticide — cats

Mechanism of Action

  • Imidacloprid — Nicotinic acetylcholine receptor (nAChR) agonist (ectoparasiticide): Imidacloprid is a chloronicotinyl neonicotinoid insecticide that acts as an agonist at insect nicotinic acetylcholine receptors (nAChRs) — specifically at postsynaptic nAChR subtypes in insect CNS (predominantly α4/β2 and related heteromeric subtypes in the insect mushroom body and motor neuron pathways); in normal cholinergic neurotransmission, acetylcholine (ACh) released from presynaptic terminals binds postsynaptic nAChRs, opening the receptor-gated Na+/K+ cation channel → membrane depolarisation and neuronal activation, followed by rapid ACh hydrolysis by acetylcholinesterase (AChE) and receptor closure; Imidacloprid binds the ACh-binding site on insect nAChRs but is not hydrolysed by AChE — it persistently activates the receptor, causing continuous cation channel opening → sustained membrane depolarisation of insect motor neurons and interneurons → uncontrolled neuronal excitation, tremors, uncoordinated movements, paralysis, and death of the ectoparasite; Imidacloprid has high selectivity for insect nAChRs over mammalian nAChRs due to differences in receptor subunit composition (insect nAChRs are primarily homomeric α8 or heteromeric subunit assemblies absent in vertebrates; mammalian nAChRs at the neuromuscular junction are α1β1δγ/ε heteromers with structurally distinct ACh binding sites) — providing a wide safety margin in cats; Imidacloprid is lipophilic and distributes across the skin surface via the lipid layer and sebaceous glands following spot-on application, killing contact-exposed adult fleas rapidly (within a few hours) without requiring the parasite to bite the host
  • Moxidectin — Glutamate-gated chloride channel (GluCl) potentiator + GABA agonist (endectocide): Moxidectin is a second-generation macrocyclic lactone (milbemycin class, structurally related to avermectins but without the avermectin sugar moiety) that acts as a potent positive allosteric modulator and direct agonist at glutamate-gated chloride channels (GluCl) in invertebrate nerve and muscle cells; GluCl channels are pentameric ligand-gated chloride channels (pLGIC) expressed selectively in invertebrate neuromuscular junctions, pharyngeal muscle, and somatic muscle motor neurons — they are absent in vertebrates (vertebrates have glycine-gated Cl− channels and GABA-A channels with distinct subunit composition, to which moxidectin has low affinity at therapeutic doses); Moxidectin binds at the GluCl subunit interface (non-competitive with glutamate at the orthosteric site) and at an ivermectin-sensitive hydrophobic site within the transmembrane domain → potentiates or directly activates GluCl, causing irreversible or prolonged Cl− channel opening → sustained Cl− influx → membrane hyperpolarisation of invertebrate motor neurons and muscle cells → flaccid paralysis (pharyngeal pump paralysis in nematodes — preventing feeding; somatic muscle paralysis in helminths and arthropod ectoparasites) → death or expulsion of the parasite; Moxidectin also potentiates GABA-gated Cl− channels in invertebrate CNS at higher concentrations, contributing additional inhibitory neurotransmission; mammalian safety is provided by: (1) absence of GluCl in vertebrates; (2) P-glycoprotein (MDR1/ABCB1) efflux at the blood-brain barrier, limiting CNS penetration — MDR1-deficient dogs (Collies, Australian Shepherds) are highly sensitive but this is less clinically significant in cats at standard topical doses; following dermal absorption, Moxidectin achieves systemic plasma concentrations sufficient to kill circulating Dirofilaria immitis L3/L4 larvae (heartworm prevention), eliminate intestinal Toxocara cati (roundworm), Ancylostoma tubaeforme (hookworm), and kill ectoparasitic mites (Otodectes cynotis — ear mites, Notoedres cati — feline scabies) via systemic distribution

Spectrum of Activity

  • Ectoparasites (Imidacloprid + Moxidectin): Ctenocephalides felis and C. canis (fleas — adult kill within hours; flea larval kill in environment via Imidacloprid in shed coat debris), Ixodes and Rhipicephalus spp. (ticks), Otodectes cynotis (ear mites), Notoedres cati (feline sarcoptic mange), Demodex cati (demodicosis — via Moxidectin systemic activity)
  • Endoparasites (Moxidectin systemic): Toxocara cati (feline roundworm), Ancylostoma tubaeforme (feline hookworm), Dirofilaria immitis L3/L4 larvae (heartworm prevention — cats 6 months and older should be tested for existing heartworm infection before commencing prevention), Aelurostrongylus abstrusus (feline lungworm — efficacy reported)

Indications

  • Treatment and prevention of flea infestations in cats and kittens (≥0.6kg, ≥7 weeks)
  • Treatment and prevention of tick infestations in cats
  • Treatment of ear mite infestations (Otodectes cynotis) in cats
  • Treatment of Notoedres cati (feline scabies) in cats
  • Treatment of intestinal roundworm (Toxocara cati) and hookworm (Ancylostoma tubaeforme) in cats
  • Prevention of heartworm disease (Dirofilaria immitis) in cats in endemic areas

Dosage & Application

  • 0.3ml pipette — cats up to 2.5kg body weight
  • 0.9ml pipette — cats 2.5–7.5kg body weight
  • Apply directly to skin (not hair) at the base of the skull / back of neck; part fur to ensure skin contact
  • Apply once monthly; do not bathe or allow swimming for 48 hours post-application
  • Test cats aged 6 months or older for existing heartworm infection before initiating heartworm prevention

Contraindications & Safety

  • Do not use in kittens under 7 weeks old or under 0.6kg body weight
  • Do not use in sick or debilitated animals
  • Do not use in cats with known hypersensitivity to imidacloprid, moxidectin, or any excipient
  • Prevent treated cats from licking the application site; prevent other animals from grooming the treated cat until dry
  • Do not use in rabbits — imidacloprid may cause adverse reactions in rabbits
  • Store in a cool, dry place away from direct sunlight; keep out of reach of children
